Don V Black, PhD (Physics, Visualization, Aerospace)

Digital Don Dr. Don V Black is Founder and Director of Digital ChoreoGraphics, a software design and development firm that has been serving Fortune 500 companies in the Aerospace, Educational, Medical and Industrial sectors since 1976. He has a Masters in Visual Computing from the UCI School of Information and Computer Sciences, a Ph.D. in Computer Graphics and Visualization from the UCI School of Engineering, and over 30 years of experience as a professional Engineer, Entrepreneur, Educator, Scientist and Visionary in Aerospace Engineering.

Dr. Black is the Founding Chair of the IEEE-OC Game Engineers SIG, the Annual IEEE Intercollegiate Computer Game Showcase, and has served as Chair of the Orange County IEEE. In addition to his membership in four IEEE Technical Societies, he is a member of SIGGRAPH, AOPA, AAAS, AIAA, APS, Sigma Xi, the IEEE California Public Policy & Government Activities committee and the Founding Chair of the ACM of Orange County. Don also has an FAA Airmen [private pilot] Certificate, and is a student club advisor in the School of Information and Computer Sciences at UCI.

His current research interests include General Relativity, Quantum Computing, Advanced Propulsion Systems, Computer Games & Simulations, Interplanetary Transfer Orbits, Continuous Thrust Trajectories, CubeSats, and Artificial Intelligence.

Richard Palais, PhD (Mathematics, Visualization)

Dick Palais Harvard University awarded Dr. Richard Palais his B.A. in 1952, his M.A. in 1954, and his Ph.D. in 1956. He was an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow and a member at Princeton Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) from 1958 to 1960, and a Professor at Brandeis University from 1960 until 2003, when he became a Adjunct Professor at UCI. His awards are too numerous to list here.

Dr Richard S. Palais’ long-term research interests have spanned several areas, including Compact differentiable transformation groups, nonlinear global analysis, critical point theory (in particular Morse theory), submanifold geometry
and integrable systems and solitons. In recent years, he has become interested in mathematical visualization, an aspect of geometry that allows one to understand and explore mathematical phenomena via visualization. One of Palais’ major ongoing projects is the development and continued improvement of a program called 3D-XplorMath, a tool for aiding in the visualization of a wide variety of mathematical objects and processes.

Professor Palais' introduced the Mostow–Palais theorem, the Lie–Palais theorem, the Morse–Palais lemma, and the Palais–Smale compactness condition, and has graciously made his many books & papers available online for downloaded from here: http://vmm.math.uci.edu/PalaisPapers/

James Parker, PhD (Informatics, Game Engineering)

Jim Parker, PhDDr James Parker is a Professor of computer science at the University of Calgary working in the Faculty of Fine Arts. He works on digital media in the form of video games (especially Serious Games), animations, audio, and novel interfaces to computers and their incorporation into human-centered systems. He received his B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics and M.Sc. in Computer Science in calgary, and his Ph.D. (Doctor in de Wetenschappen) in Informatics (Informatica) from the State University of Gent (Universiteit Gent) with greatest distinction (met de grootste onderscheiding) or, in Latin, Magna Cum Laude. His Ph.D. thesis concerns pattern recognition in practical environments, and includes work on using vision methods to assist in water treatment plant control. Past research work involves discrete event simulation, pattern analysis, machine vision, and use of multiple/parallel algorithms. These days the research group is interested in: video games for native North American culture, including language preservation and restoring the oral tradition and story telling; and games for physical activity for improving the fitness levels of players and helping with reducing the obesity problem in Canada's youth; latency reduction in multiplayer games using novel means.

Proessor Parker is author of Practical Computer Vision Using C, Algorithms for Image Processing and Computer Vision, The Guide to Computer Simulations and Games.Introduction to Computer Game Development Using Processing.

Michael McCafferty (Author, Advisor to Entrepreneurs)

Michael McCafferty, AdvisorMr. McCafferty is a veteran serial entrepreneur with success in several startups, primarily with computers and software, and is the inventor and developer of TeleMagic, the first contact management (CRM) software for the PC. After 7 years as founder, programmer and CEO, with hundreds of thousands of customers, two INC 500 awards, and 70 employees, in Michael's own words, "the exit was rewarding."

Mike mentors a select few entrepreneurs and serves as an advisor/board member with several startup businesses in Southern California. Additionally, he writes the blog The Art and Science of Success in Business and is author of two books: The Interactive Pocket Guide for Entrepreneurs and The Spirit of Adventure.

Mike has a Bachelor of Science degree from Mount Saint Mary's University (MD) in Accounting/Economics, and learned computers and software while a sales rep for IBM starting in 1964. He has also experienced Life as a race car driver, open-cockpit biplane pilot, competitive pool shooter, freestyle Frisbee player, and yogi. It seems that he can never learn enough.

Waldemar Augustyn (Software, Networks - MSEE, MBA)

Waldemar AugustynMr. Augustyn has over 20 years of experience in networking software both on the datacom and telecom sides. He has worked for Nortel Networks, Telco Systems, Security Dynamics and the Internet pioneer company Proteon.  He is the founder of the consulting company Astyn Systems that is dedicated to the development of foundations for advanced network infrastructure and operations.  He developed a system for predictable network services called Cell Oriented Network Infrastructure funded in part by National Science Foundation.  He also developed a system for building layer 2 networks of arbitrary lengths over IP networks known as VPLS,  IETF RFC4665 and related.  He continues to be active in the networking space and is currently working on a flexible addressing management system for private networks referred to as IPREF.  He also worked for large media companies such as DirecTV and Sony Playstation.  He received his MSEE from the top technical school in his native Poland: Wroclaw University of Technology (Politechnika Wroclawska). He was awarded his MBA from Northeastern University.

Steve Holland (Aerospace - BSME)

Mr Holland received his Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mechanical Engineering (M.E.) from San Diego State University in 2013 with a GPA of 3.56. From a childhood passion of space, he has geared his expertise for a career in this new age of privatized space launches and technologies, including internships at Goodrich Aersostructures and Alliant Technologies. His personal interests include exploring new manufacturing processes while experimenting with low cost control systems. Steve's expertise includes designing with various CAD software packages, programming within MATLAB, Arduino IDE (C++), and Visual Basic Applications, and managing Gantt charts in Microsoft Project. His professional experience includes the satellite manufacturing industry.

Gilbert Jackson, J.D. (Attorney)

Mr. Jackson graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry in 1969.  Augmenting his ten years in the commercial fishing industry, he enrolled in Law School at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and worked his way through Law School by alternating years of law school with years of menhaden commercial fishing culminating with a Juris Doctor In Law in December of 1982.  Most of his legal career has been in the field of Occupational Safety and Health Law where he draws upon his scientific knowledge and industrial experience for their application to industrial health and safety in his practice. 

Mr. Jackson brings to the Board of the American Institute for Research in Science and Technology a keen scientific mind honed by the rigors of legal thought and reasoning and hard work.

Mark Kelley (Mechanical - MSME)

Mr Kelley is an accomplished Senior Mechanical Engineer who is passionate about innovation and technical challenges. He received both his Masters (MSc) and his Bachelors (BSc) degrees in Mechanical Engineering (ME) from Penn State University, where his thesis topic was Ceramic/Metal Laminated Composite Material. He has performed M.E. design services for Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Pratt&Whitney Aircraft, Loral Space Systems, and L-3 Communications. He is proficient at designing high-volume electronic enclosures, freeform industrial design surfaces & aerospace components. Experienced in engineering documentation, product development and manufacturing processes, he is skilled at multidisciplinary team collaboration, communication, and technical training/mentoring. Specializing in creative application of CAD applications and high-level CAD/PLM system administration.

George Robinson (Physics, BSEE, MBA)

George Robinson (KK6DRU) has over 40 years experience in the design and development of solid state power conversion and energy and power systems. He received his BSEE degree from the University of Utah and his MBA from California State University, Fullerton. He is a senior member of IEEE and has coauthored papers on power and energy and electric propulsion systems and is registered professional engineer in California. Mr. Robinson is currently in an advanced physics study program with potential applications in space solar power systems and small satellite missions.

Gary Van Stephenson (Physics, Space Systems - ME)

Gary Van Stephenson Mr. Stephenson is an advisor to the US Air Force Space and Missile System Center’s Development Planning office (SMC/XR) through the LinQuest Corporation. He is also the owner of Seculine Consulting specializing in aerospace related applied physics. He has over 30 years of aerospace industry experience in SATCOM, navigation, and remote sensing mission areas. He holds a BA in Philosophy and a BS is Physics from Montana State University, and a Masters in Systems Engineering with a graduate certification in Space Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.

Mr. Stephenson has been an active advocate for human spaceflight. He is a member of the National Space Society, a charter member of the Los Angeles chapter of the Mars Society, co-founder and Technical Director of the Mars Initiative, a fund-raising organization developing prize funds for human landings on Mars, and he is a founding partner of the Mars Tourism Board TM, which seeks to publicize round trip options to and from the Red Planet.
